I have been hard at working putting the finishing touches on my next online class- Sketchbook Delight Part 2! I really can't believe the feedback and amazing amount of participation that Sketchbook Delight has received and after many requests I have put together a sequel full of advanced sketching and drawing techniques, projects, drawing prompts, new concepts and lots of INSPIRATION!

All of my classes have unlimited access- once you register you can create and access at any time and work at your own pace. Whenever I "release" a new class- I always structure it in a five week format. Many people who want to work in this format, as the lessons are posted each week, enjoy working at this pace but once the five weeks are up there is unlimited time to access everything.

I have found that some people prefer to work along with the five week format when I release the class while others will wait months until they have the time, money and the schedule to register for the class. Either way works- just know that once you are in- there is no deadline or pressure to create.

The class goes live February 1st and tomorrow I will be giving you another preview and will be hosting a giveaway for 3 free spots in the class! So check back tomorrow for a chance to win!

vegan/gluten free mac & cheese

I am happy to report that the changes I have made to my diet over the past 3 months since Lucy was born have helped tremendously with controlling her reflux. I have cut out all dairy (and been eating vegan as much as possible), no spicy and acidic foods and gotten rid of most wheat (gluten)! Talk about discipline folks!!! Something in these changes have not only made a difference for Lucy's tummy but have made me feel really amazing both inside and out!

But boy do I miss creamy cheesy dishes! So I set out scouring the internet (thanks to many of you for the links!!) to get inspired to create some of my own recipes to somehow recreate or at least come close to some dishes that would satisfy my cravings. Let me just say nothing will come close or taste like real cheesy goodness- at least to me- but I am so happy that I can enjoy something a healthy and keep my dear daughter comfortable.

After doing tons of research and reading lots of recipes here is my take on a quick vegan and gluten free mac & cheese.

There are all sorts of gluten free pastas out there- Whole Foods and Trader Joes seem to have the a bigger selection but I have also been able to find some options at the regular grocery store too.

Boil pasta and drain water leaving just a little pasta water in with the noodles and return pan to burner set to low heat.

Add the pureed squash to the noodles (you can buy this frozen or puree your own).

Add grated vegan cheese (this is actually a really great dairy free option- it melts and tastes almost like real cheese!)

Mix in the salt, pepper, spices and mustard.

Optional- add a dollop of vegan butter or margarine.

Keep mixing everything on low until the cheese is melted.

The result is a quick creamy pasta dish that tastes like light version of mac & cheese and is perfect for adding your favorite vegis, meatless sausage or even the real thing.

I lOVE me some some fashion! In fact the only thing I miss about working a day job is getting dressed up everyday in all sorts of cute outfits. So I decided that I will be dedicating Fridays to all things fashion! From my own outfits and clothing, to trends, inspiration and DIY projects- Fridays are all about fashion! Today it is all about the maxi skirt- one of my "go to" items. I own about 15 different maxi skirts because they are SO versatile and just about the most comfy thing I can thinking of wearing!

Its time for a little update before I forget everything that is going on!! I have been really busy over here and I honestly have no idea how I am juggling everything (some things not so well-like email- I promise I'll get back to you!) because there is a whole lot of this going on

In between the kisses, cuddling, silly noises and soothing (its really quite sickening) I am managing to get a lot done. Here are a few updates-

dairy/gluten free muffins

So if you didn't hear, our little Lucy has struggled with reflux issues since birth. Its been a challenge over here but with time, patience and LOTS of altering the way we do things- she is getting better and better every day. The biggest alteration has been my diet which now has TONS of restrictions- the big ones are dairy and wheat (not so fun for a gal who likes to pig out on cheese and bread!)

So I have been on a hunt for recipes that will satisfy my taste buds and keep Lucy happy. My favorite so far is one that I actually came up with after doing my research and it is YUMMY- dairy free and gluten free pumpkin muffins (they still have sugar but thats ok with me!)

Simple mix up the dry ingredients.

Add the wet- pumpkin and applesauce.

Mix well.

Fill baking cups with batter.

Bake at 350 for about 15-20 minutes.

The result is a really moist muffin with lots of flavor! I can easily eat an entire batch!

Inspired by my own creative habits, I've created an online class that is structured as 30 challenge for those looking to start a new routine that incorporates simple ways to be creative every day regardless of your schedule. From simple drawing and painting exercises to easy craft projects, photography, journaling and ways to find inspiration. I have assembled 30 posts- one SIMPLE idea, lesson, prompt or project to complete one day a time. The concept is that you commit to 30 days of doing something creative and small each day (or as much time as you are able to commit- there is no pressure!) and by the end of those 30 days you have developed a new habit or at least a new understanding of how to fit creativity into your daily routine!

gingerbread present toppers and tags

I am still creating from the brown paper bags we have on hand (see last week's post) and I came up with the idea to make simple gingerbread men to use as tags and to top my gifts. The brown paper is the PERFECT color to resembles gingerbread!

This is such an easy little project that even I was able to whip up a big batch of gingerbread men while taking care of little Lucy!

I started by drawing the outline of a gingerbread man- if you have a cookie cutter you could also trace around it.

I cut out the shapes.

And using my MOST favorite products ever- Scribbles 3-D paint (AKA puff paint) and Tulip Bead in a Bottle I added details.

I utilized the dimension of the the paint to create the look of frosted and candy details.

I created a big batch of gingerbread men.

And also created some simple shapes filled with little painted details.

Last, I added them to the top of my gifts!

guest post- create colorful, transparent textures on paper from Jane Davila

I have asked a few of my creative friends to help me out with my blog here and there during my time with a new baby and today's guest post comes to you from Jane Davila

Mix fluid matte medium with acrylic paint and apply it to paper to create delicious transparent textures to use as backgrounds for collage and mixed-media art.

Ingredients:

Fluid matte medium (I used Golden brand but there are others)

acrylic paint

paint brush

container to mix paint and medium

heavy watercolor paper or bristol board

items to create texture - bubble wrap, combs, skewers, mesh, etc

papers with brushed striations and slight texture

Directions:

1. Mix approx 2 parts of fluid matte medium to 1 part of acrylic paint. The more medium you add, the more transparent the result will be. Experiment to see what proportion will rock your socks!

2. Apply the paint/medium mixture to heavy paper with a paintbrush. I use a crummy, stiff old brush to get lots of lovely brushstrokes.

3. Immediately press items to the painted surface to lift up some of the fresh paint to create texture. Try bubble wrap, sponges, combs, leaves, anything with an interesting texture.

Hints:

If covering a large area, paint an approximate 6" x 6" or 8" x 8" section at a time and create the texture before moving on to another section so the paint doesn't dry before you get to it. Overlap sections slightly.

Add a very small amount of paint (drops) for a very pale transparent wash of texture.

Use just the old brush for striated texture.

Blend or layer two or more colors on top of each other.

Use more that one texture, overlapping or layering.

Use a small foam brayer to apply the paint/medium mixture if you don't want any brushstrokes.

holiday wrapping with paper bags

Last year it was book pages and this year I am using recycled brown paper bags for my gift wrap! Never underestimate just how far a brown paper bag will go in your holiday wrapping!

I've put together some VERY simple and easy ideas to inspire you to use brown paper bags in your wrapping-

Any brown paper bag will do- I used a couple of Whole Foods bags.

Use a white out pen and doodle all over the surface.

Use it as gift wrap.

Use the handles of the bag as a ribbon and bow.

Use a sharpie and a white out pen to draw or doodle all over the surface- I drew snowflakes all over.

Use to wrap your gift,

and add some fun ribbon to top it off.

Create flower gift toppers.

Cut out a circle

add hot glue to the middle and scrunch it up to create dimension.

Layer circles on top of each other and then use scrunched up paper to the center of the flower.

Add to the top of your gift.

Play around with different shapes and sizes of flowers.

I used lots of triangles and layered then on top of each other

and added scrunched up paper to the middle.

The possibilities are endless - get creative and challenge yourself to put those brown paper bags to use!

I love hand work. Not because I have endless amounts of patience and love peaceful hours of meditative stitchery. Sounds blissful but it’s no part of the reality of mothering five children.

I love hand work because it fits into the five minutes I’m sitting in the carpool line. A stitch stays put when you need to jump up and change a diaper. A tin of beads and a bit of cloth can travel with you during endless hours at music lessons and soccer practice.

Did you see those lovely little loopy yellow beads in the first picture? They are just tooooo much fun to play with and I thought I’d share how to create them with you.

I’ve started with a fun fabric flower; cut, fused, and stitched to a piece of craft-fuse interfacing.

I’ve outlined the petals in a contrasting color of beads. I’m using a size 11 applique needle and nymo beading thread. I find that beading needles aren’t quite strong enough to sew through more than one layer of fabric.

Knot your thread well and bring your needle up from the back right where you want your loopy stack to sit. Give it a good tug to make sure it’s not going to pop through the fabric.

Slide a large bead down the thread. I’m using a green size 6 seed bead.

Load your needle with beads, I’m using ten yellow size 11 seeds here. Use as few as three or as many as you wish to make a long or short loop. Take your needle back down through the hole of the large bead and straight through to the back of your fabric. Pull it tight then repeat the process to create as many looped stacks as you wish. Make sure to knot your thread tightly into the fabric every few stacks.

You can have lots of fun varying the length of the loops, the sizes of the beads, or even making each looped stack into a beaded fringe see tutorial here

I have been working on number of things for the new year that I will be sharing in the weeks to come.

The first is a brand new online class that is a little different from the rest of my classes- called Create Daily. Recently, with all of the changes in my life, I've been doing a lot of reflection on how important it is for me to be creative and even more important to try and make time for it. As an artist, I need to be doing something daily to foster my growth and passion for art. Not only does it make me a better artist but it helps me to to survive everything that life throws my way. For years now, I have been setting aside time to do something creative every single day- it has become a practice that has brought clarity, balance and joy to my life.

I first made a plastic photo flower pot for my friends children's birthday, she has 3 children so I made her a pot with a flower for each one. The best thing about this project is you probably have everything in your house! You can make them without the photo in the center for an event like a baby shower or birthday party!

1)Supplies
Plastic bottle
Scissors
Spray paint
Picture
3 inch circle punch
Plastic silverware ( for stem)
Rocks
Plastic caps
Plastic container ( yogurt cup, cottage cheese container or whatever you have on hand)
* Plastic glue- this is the one thing you probably don't have but you can find it at a hobby shop it's used for plastic models or you can use super glue.
Floral foam or styrofoam foam
Paper glaze ( optional )
Cardboard

2) cut bottle in 1/2 then cut petals ( they can be however long or short you want them to be), push petals open & spray paint (you only have to spray paint the front)

3) punch out picture & cardboard. Glue picture to cardboard & cover picture with paper glaze. Once dry glue into the center of bottle flower.

4) glue fork to back of flower with plastic glue or super glue. Let dry.

5) spray paint pot, let dry. Put floral foam or styrofoam in center of pot then push bottom of stem into foam. Fill with rocks so that it's weighted down then top with plastic caps.

Paint the colors of the beach, horizontally on a long piece of paper

Scrape the paint upwards, toward the sky

Fold in half, softly, to transfer the paint to the other side

Add salt or alcohol while the paint is wet to add texture

fold and stitch into a soft cover journal.

stronger than i ever knew

I'm not gonna lie, the last month (actually the last 10 months) have been some of the most challenging times I have yet to experience in my safe (and most of the time happy) little life. Though filled with joy, excitement and fierce love, I have been forced again and again to live and operate so far out of my comfort zone that I am now beginning to get very comfortable being uncomfortable! Up until two years ago I didn't want kids- until then it just didn't feel like it fit into our life plan. Thankfully we had a massive change of heart and the decision to start a family was made. But through the entire experience (because I am a bit neurotic and selfish!) I was worried- not only worried about the physical unknown of being pregnant and then raising a child BUT REALLY worried about what this would mean for me as an artist and an entrepreneur. For years I had spent so much time working towards my goals of being an artist that amidst the joy of welcoming a little one- I was terrified of losing myself in the experience, of losing my desires to be an artist/entrepreneur and even losing my ability to be creative.

Fast forward to the last month of our dear little Lucy's life....my fears and worries did come true and I did lose myself but not in the way I spent so much time worrying about. Instead I seem to have lost myself to to strange combo of love, selfLESSness, connection, learning and ultimately redefining this new chapter in our lives. While I've had my moments- especially early on- of asking how in the world am I going to do all of this-I just gave in to the newness (something that is not easy when you are neurotic!), the uncomfortable moments and intense emotions and have embraced this new chapter. I've made the decision to make it all work and its ok if things look and feel different.

Though the last month has presented its challenges I've made the decision that no matter how busy, challenging or time consuming being a mom is, I can and I will hold onto my passion, my creativity and my identity as an artist. In the last month I have strapped little Lucy to my chest, right next to my heart and pushed past the fatigue, the fear, the newness of being a mom and continued to create, to fulfill obligations and redefine this new chapter. I know that continuing to make time for these things will make me a better parent, a balanced person, and an example to my daughter of what it means to pursue your dreams.

This last month has been challenging- making my way through the unchartered waters of parenthood but I have learned that my ability to learn, to adapt, to conquer, to create and to LOVE is stronger than I ever knew.

I cannot believe the holidays are upon us and this weekend I took some time to start my own preparations. First I worked on creating a wreath- if you have been reading my blog you will know that I really enjoy celebrating the seasons with a handmade wreath like here, here, here and here

Crafting with book pages are all the rage these days and I love using them to draw and paint on.

I started by drawing a simple flower (inspired by a poinsettia)

Using watercolors I filled the flowers with color.

and added details.

I created lots and lots of pages filled with flowers and leaves.

Next I cut out all of the flowers and leaves.

I used a styrofoam wreath and a glue gun and glued the flowers to the surface

I layered the flowers to create fullness.

And there you have it! A simple but beautiful handmade wreath using VERY few supplies and $$$!

2. Then, continuing on the same piece of paper, draw four more similar elephants (hoping for one that has a bit more personality to it):

3. If you're still not wow'ed, do a page of one-liners*, an exercise inspired by Pablo Picasso that helps you practice putting your subconscious in the driver's seat:

4. Decide to take a grumpy one further and apply some Oaxacan-Inspired Embellishing...

5. ...but go for a walk first.

6. Go ahead and pick up that piece of trash that reminds you of an elephant (gross as it may be)....

7. Now render that shape in watercolor on cold-press (textured) watercolor paper, leaving the eye white.

8. Finally add some pencil shading and line work (being sure to put in that grumpy expression you liked earlier)!

chunky shimmer bangles

I love accessories and I am always looking for new ways to create my own bling.

Recently I decided to use Tulips Fashion Glitter Shimmer Paint to create some chunky shimmer bangles.

The shimmer paint is a really cool product because its all glitter but no mess!! Great for transforming fabric into something a little fancy.

I used gold shimmer paint

and painted a nice thick layer onto the surface of scrap fabric.

I wanted a little bit of texture so I used a stamp and some copper acrylic paint and stamped into the wet surface of the fabric.

The result is a very subtle imprint of the stamps that adds a little texture to the surface.

Now, for the next step your could use wooden bangles, plastic bangles or really anything that will fit around your wrist but I like to use craft foam because it is a little stretchy and very light to create a big chunky bangle.

I used craft foam pencil holders- they can be found at just about any craft store in the kids aisle near the craft foam.

I cut sections of the foam to create the bangle.

After my shimmer fabric was dry I cut out strips

and using hot glue I wrapped and glued them to the craft foam bangle.

Once the entire bangle was wrapped I could't resist adding some little details and embellishments with Tulip Beads in a Bottle.

The result is chunky and funky bangles!

One of my favorite fall treats are spice cookies and my favorite recipe is an easy one that I've put my own little twist on (a pinch of ingredients here and there). I LOVE these cookies and could eat dozens of them (and actually have in the last few week!)

In a bowl, mix together all dry ingredients

Using a mixer, beat egg, molasses and butter into the dry ingredients until combined and a dough forms.

Roll dough into little balls, sprinkle with sugar and line on a baking sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 10-15 minutes

I love making something out of nothing! To make these earrings grab some paper.

I’m using deli paper, but you
can use anything, including fabric) and cover it with paint.

Draw all over it, add stenciled images, whatever makes you happy!

Fold the edge of the paper over and draw your basic earring shape.
Keep it simple.

Cut out the shape, and because of the fold, you’ll now have two matching pieces!

I like to glue my pieces to a book page for some added stability and a
bit of interest on the back.

Once the glue is dry, cut out the pieces.

Pre-heat your Melting Pot and melt some clear Ultra Thick Embossing
Enamel (UTEE) in it.

Once the UTEE is melted, place each piece into the pot and make sure
that both sides are coated with UTEE.

Pull the pieces out of the Melting Pot with tweezers (do not touch
with your fingers – the UTEE is very hot). Let some of the excess
UTEE drip off

Place the hot piece onto a Teflon sheet. It must be Teflon so that it
doesn’t permanently stick.

If you have bubbles or weird bumps you can heat them away with a
crafting heat tool. You can either do it directly on the Teflon craft
sheet, or punch a hole and suspend the piece as you heat it.

Once the pieces are cool enough to touch, you can punch a hole and set
an eyelet in the hole.

Add your earring hooks and you’re done!

Note: The UTEE will make the paper fairly water resistant, but I
wouldn’t submerge them in water.

poetry pillow

Cut two pieces of fabric approximately 13" x 13". Paint one side of one of the pieces of fabric with white acrylic paint.

When the paint is dry, use a red and blue sharpie marker to draw lines across the white area of the fabric mimicking the look of a piece of notebook paper.

Select a favorite verse of poetry and use a pencil to carefully write out the words on the blue lines. If you make a mistake then erase the pencil marks and start again. Once the poem is written, use a black sharpie marker to trace over the pencil marks.

Place the two right sides of the fabric pieces together and stitch. Remember to leave an opening to turn the fabric and for stuffing the pillow with batting. Once the pillow is stuffed, sew the opening shut.

Just like last year (see here) instead of dressing up and going somewhere for Halloween we created our own "make believe" at home with a little dress up, a camera, some sketching and photoshop. This year's theme- pirates!

andy's chicken and kale curry

My husband loves to cook and he has a knack for coming up with his own recipes with unique flavor and simple ingredients. One of my favorites is his curry chicken and kale- a hearty dish perfect for a fall evening.

Start by chopping all of the fresh vegetables.

In a pan, cook the chopped sweet potatoes, potatoes, garlic and onion in a little bit of peanut oil until "almost" tender.

Grill or bake the chicken breasts until tender and chop into bite size pieces. Andy likes to fry the chicken in peanut oil until golden brown.

Add a couple tablespoons of curry powder to a mixture of coconut milk (16 oz), chopped potatoes, chopped kale, chicken, 2-3 garlic cloves, 2-3 chunks of ginger, diced red chilis, a pinch of salt and pepper and a pinch of chili powder.

Simmer for about 30-40 minutes on low heat.

We like eating ours with naan (Indian flat bread)

it is is perfect for dipping!

two weeks...

Two weeks ago today little Lucy was born- such little time but it feels like an eternity that we all have know each other. Things are going well and we have "hunkered down" in our cozy home and are getting to know each other (lots of snuggling, sleeping, healing and just hanging out going on). We seem to be finding a groove (one that is constantly changing but a groove none the less). While we have moments of overwhelm and confusion we seem to be conquering the learning curve when it comes to taking care of a newborn. My body is on the road to recovery, we are actually getting good sleep (disrupted sleep but good sleep) and much to my surprise I am finding time to create every day and juggle my business. But the best part of the last two weeks is getting to know and fall in love with this new little person.

I love hand stitching and have been embroidering since I was 16 years old. And yet, I use the same ol’ handful of stitches in my work, frankly, because they’re easy and I love them! I nearly always use variegated thread, so it makes even the simplest stitches look cool.

I needed a handout for one of my classes, to show the students my basic stitches and I didn’t want to use someone else’s instructions—so I drew my own instructions in my journal! Then of course, I needed a stitched sample. I stitched on plain felt, and glued it next to the illustration stitch page in my mixed media journal. For the students, I created a handout with images of my journal page here is a peek-

no sew- upcycled baby hats

Long before little Lucy arrived I had prepared my monthly post for ilovetocreate. It was back when I was in the process of nesting and I spent a few weeks creating some baby clothes and thought that some super simple hats made from upcycled t-shirts would be an easy and fun project. And now that Lucy is here I actually had a teeny tiny little model!

I always like to first raid my closet or clothing that would otherwise get donated before I purchase fabric. And since I have WAY too many t-shirts that I don't wear I decided to use a few of them.

I started by drawing out the shape of the hat.

and then cut out the front and back.

Because I was short on time (again) I decided not to sew the hat but instead use Aleene's Fabric Fusion Fabric Adhesive Pen. It is non toxic and completely washable and one of my favorite "no sew" products to use.

I applied the glue to the inside edges of the hat- the tiny applicator tip is perfect for small projects.

Of course I couldn't resist creating some rolled fabric flowers (see my tutorial here) to add to a couple of the hats.

I glued the fabric flowers to the hat and let everything dry for around 36 hours.

Last I tied a knot at the end of the top of the cap- this can be adjusted depending on the size and desired length.

I created a handful of caps in different colors and patterns.

And just like that I have a little collection of baby caps all ready for Lucy to wear!

My head is a noisy place- it is always overflowing with lots of creativity, energy and endless ideas but many times it is also full of fear, anxiety and obsessive planning- bottom line- my brain never seems to stop moving. The last 9 months have made that noise even louder with worry about pregnancy, fear of the unknown and constant concern for the future. But a funny thing happened... despite laboring at home for 24 hours to 6cm before going to the hospital, pushing for 5 1/2 hours straight and then having a scary delivery (though I was able to avoid a c-section) everything went quiet on October 12th the moment I saw my daughter. And despite having to stay a few days in the hospital, feeling out of sorts and uncomfortable, managing terrible pain, having to learn all kinds of new things fast and getting to know a little baby, my head has managed to stay quiet. Something in the last 5 days has happened and all that fear, anxiety and noise has disappeared and been replaced with peace. I have no idea if this feeling will last and to be honest I really don't care I am just happy to be right here in this moment.

While I won't be taking an "official" maternity leave I will be taking a little more time away from the computer for a while with the hope of preserving this quiet time. But I have spent months preparing lots of posts to share with you in the weeks ahead and while I am around and still managing things on the creative business side- please understand that things may take me a little longer over here :)
